FAQ
Questions people ask before they book
Plans and files, prices, what happens in the studio, and how a full-size walkthrough compares with renderings and VR.
The session
What is a life-size floor plan walkthrough?
It's a way to check a floor plan by walking it. Your plan is shown at full size (1:1 scale) on a walkable floor, so you can stand in each room and see how big it really is before anything is built. It's also called a full-scale floor plan, a walkable floor plan, or floor plan projection. In Calgary, the 1to1 Plans studio shows plans on an LED floor.
What happens in a session?
Your floor plan is shown at full size on the studio's walkable LED floor, room by room, and the elevations go up on a wall-size screen. You walk through the house, move studio walls and furniture into place, and change the layout on the spot. You leave with a recording of the session.
How long is a session?
A standard session is two hours. If you want to see the studio first, there is also a 60-minute demo.
What do I need to send before my session?
Your floor plans as a PDF or a CAD file (DWG), at least three days before your session, to calgary@1to1plans.com. Elevations help too, because they go on the wall-size screen.
Who can come with me?
Anyone you are making decisions with: your partner, family, builder, designer or architect. Guests are welcome, and Calgary builders and designers bring their clients here too.
Can we change the plan during the session?
Yes. Changes are made on the spot, so you can compare a wider hallway or a moved wall while you are standing in it. Your designer then updates the official drawings.
Do I get to keep anything?
Yes. Every session is recorded, and the recording is yours to watch again and share with your builder or designer.
What if my house is bigger than the floor?
Very large plans don't fit on the floor all at once. They are walked a floor or a wing at a time, which still lets you check every room at its real size.
What furniture is in the studio?
Freestanding walls you can move, sofas, a dining table, chairs, a coffee table and a bathtub on wheels. They let you test real clearances instead of guessing.
Pricing and booking
How much does a session cost?
Every session is quoted for the plan. The price depends on its size and the kind of project: a house, a suite or addition, a commercial space, or multi-family unit plans. Send the plan through the quote form on the pricing page and the studio replies with a price and a time. The quote is free.
Do I pay when I book?
No. There is nothing to pay when you book a session online.
How do I book?
Book online and pick a time, call the studio at (403) 222-0536, or send your plans through the booking form and the studio will reply with a time and a price.
Can I see the studio before I book a full session?
Yes. You can book a 60-minute demo at the studio with your team, or a 30-minute phone call to ask questions first.
What if I need to move my session?
Call or email the studio as early as you can to rebook.
Compared with other ways to check a plan
How is this different from a 3D rendering?
A rendering is a picture on a screen, and your eye has to guess the scale. On the floor you stand in each room at its real size, next to real furniture, and feel the distances with your own body.
How is it different from virtual reality?
In VR you wear a headset and see a model. Here several people walk the same full-size plan together, move physical furniture, and talk through changes while standing in the room.
Why not tape the plan out on a garage floor?
Tape works for one room if you have the space and a free weekend. The studio shows the whole plan, or large sections of it, with walls and furniture ready, and changes are made on the spot instead of re-taped.
Isn't a showhome enough?
A showhome shows someone else's layout. The studio shows yours, with your room sizes, before anything is built.
When and why
When is the best time to book?
When your plans are close to final but before they go in for permits. At that point a change is still an edit to a drawing, not a change on site.
Is it worth it for a renovation or a backyard suite?
Often more so. In a basement, a kitchen or a suite under 900 square feet, a few inches decide whether a room works, and those are hard to judge on paper.
Do you work with commercial and multi-family plans?
Yes: offices, clinics, restaurants, retail units and multi-family unit plans. Walking the space with the people who will work in it shows problems with clearances and flow before the fit-out.
Do builders and designers use the studio with their clients?
Yes. Calgary builders bring clients through their plans before permits, and designers use it to present a plan at the size it will be lived in.
