Alberta's building code sets no minimum floor area for a bedroom. The National Building Code, 2023 Alberta Edition, in the second printing in force since 17 August 2026, sets a 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) ceiling over part of the room and an escape window that opens to at least 0.35 m² (3.8 sq ft) instead (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.3.1 and 9.9.10.1). The size of the room comes down to the bed: the Canadian mattress company Endy lists a queen at 60 by 80 in and a king at 76 by 80 in (Endy, 2023).
Key takeaways
- As of September 2026, the NBC(AE) 2023 sets no minimum floor area for a bedroom; a bedroom needs a 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) ceiling over the lesser of the room or 3.5 m² (38 sq ft) (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.3.1).
- The room the code calls the master bedroom needs that 2.1 m ceiling over the lesser of the room or 4.9 m² (53 sq ft) (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.3.1).
- Unless the home is sprinklered, each bedroom needs a window or outside door that opens to at least 0.35 m² (3.8 sq ft), with no side under 380 mm (1 ft 3 in) (NBC(AE) 2023, 9.9.10.1).
- Endy lists a queen mattress at 1 524 by 2 032 mm (60 by 80 in) and a king at 1 930 by 2 032 mm (76 by 80 in), and suggests at least a 10 by 10 ft room for a queen and 10 by 12 ft for a king (Endy, 2023).
- By arithmetic on Endy's mattress and room sizes, a centred queen has 762 mm (2 ft 6 in) free on each side in a 10 ft square room, a king on the 12 ft wall has 864 mm (2 ft 10 in), and both have 1 016 mm (3 ft 4 in) past the end of the bed (Endy, 2023).
- For its accessibility top-up of up to $7,500, Calgary's secondary suite incentive asks for a bedroom with no measurement under 3 m (9 ft 10 in) and a 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) turning diameter (The City of Calgary, 2026).
Is there a minimum bedroom size in Alberta?
No. The code's section on rooms and spaces sets ceiling heights, hallway widths and doorway sizes, but no floor area for a bedroom or any other room in a home. It regulates a bedroom in other ways: the ceiling over part of the floor, a way out through a window or door, the doorway and the alarms.
Here's what the NBC(AE) 2023 does set for a bedroom, as of September 2026:
| Item | Code minimum | Clause |
|---|---|---|
| Floor area | None set | None |
| Ceiling, master bedroom | 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) over the lesser of the room or 4.9 m² (53 sq ft) | Table 9.5.3.1 |
| Ceiling, other bedrooms | 2.1 m over the lesser of the room or 3.5 m² (38 sq ft) | Table 9.5.3.1 |
| Ceiling in a secondary suite | 1.95 m (6 ft 5 in), or 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) under beams and ducts | 9.5.3.1 |
| Escape window or door | Opens to 0.35 m² (3.8 sq ft), no side under 380 mm (1 ft 3 in), unless sprinklered | 9.9.10.1 |
| Doorway | Fits a door 760 mm (2 ft 6 in) wide and 1 980 mm (6 ft 6 in) high | Table 9.5.5.1 |
| Smoke alarm | One in each sleeping room | 9.10.19.3 |
| Closet | None required | None |
Note: these are code minimums, not recommended sizes; the City of Calgary checks them when it reviews permit drawings.
The doorway can drop to 610 mm (2 ft) for rooms off a hallway that's allowed to be 710 mm wide, covered in the hallway width guide. Where the home has a fuel-burning appliance, a carbon monoxide alarm goes inside each bedroom or within 5 m (16 ft 5 in) of its door (NBC(AE) 2023, 9.32.3.9).
What does "over the lesser of 3.5 m²" mean for a bedroom?
It means a sloped or partly low ceiling is fine, as long as enough floor has 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) above it. In a bedroom bigger than 3.5 m² (38 sq ft), that's 3.5 m² of floor, a square about 1 871 mm (6 ft 2 in) on a side. In the main bedroom it's 4.9 m² (53 sq ft), about 2 214 mm (7 ft 3 in) square. A smaller room needs the height over all of it.
The full-height area has to connect to the door (NBC(AE) 2023, 9.5.3.1), and it's measured at floor level. This matters in attic bedrooms under a sloped roof and in basement bedrooms with bulkheads. A bedroom inside a secondary suite follows the suite's ceiling rule instead, covered in the basement ceiling height guide.
What window does a bedroom need?
A window or an outside door that opens from inside "without the use of keys, tools or special knowledge", with an opening of at least 0.35 m² (3.8 sq ft) and no side under 380 mm (1 ft 3 in). The window has to stay open in an emergency without being propped. In a window well, 760 mm (2 ft 6 in) must stay clear in front of it (NBC(AE) 2023, 9.9.10.1). The one exception is a sprinklered home.
Both numbers have to hold at once. The code's own note shows that a 380 by 380 mm opening is only 0.144 m², while openings of 380 by 920 mm or 592 by 592 mm reach 0.35 m² (NBC(AE) 2023, Note A-9.9.10.1.(2)). Calgary's suite page adds that a casement window "must swing open a full 90 degrees" (Calgary new suite page, 2026).
The window affects where the bed goes. The code sets no maximum sill height, but its note recommends sills no higher than 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) and suggests built-in furniture under a higher window (NBC(AE) 2023, Note A-9.9.10.1.(1)). In a basement, the escape window or door must be in the bedroom itself. The egress window guide covers window wells and window types.
What size room do you need for a queen or a king bed?
For a queen, Endy suggests a room of at least 10 by 10 ft; for a king, 10 by 12 ft. It calls the queen "the most popular mattress size in Canada" (Endy, 2023). Endy's guide, published 17 January 2023, gives these sizes:
| Mattress | Size | Smallest room Endy recommends |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 991 by 1 905 mm (39 by 75 in) | 2 134 by 3 048 mm (7 by 10 ft) |
| Queen | 1 524 by 2 032 mm (60 by 80 in) | 3 048 by 3 048 mm (10 by 10 ft) |
| King | 1 930 by 2 032 mm (76 by 80 in) | 3 048 by 3 658 mm (10 by 12 ft) |
| California king | 1 829 by 2 134 mm (72 by 84 in) | 3 658 by 3 658 mm (12 by 12 ft) |
Note: these are mattress sizes and a retailer's room suggestions, not code rules; a frame and headboard add to the footprint.
That 10 by 10 ft room is 100 sq ft (9.29 m²), which matches Endy's advice that a queen suits bedrooms of "100 square feet or larger". A 10 by 12 ft room is 120 sq ft (11.15 m²).
How much space do you need around a bed?
There's no code clearance around a bed, so the useful numbers are what a room leaves. Centred in the smallest rooms Endy suggests, the mattresses have this much space around them, before a frame, headboard, nightstands or dresser take their share.
A queen in a 3 048 mm (10 ft) square room leaves 762 mm (2 ft 6 in) on each side and 1 016 mm (3 ft 4 in) at the foot:
A king on the 12 ft wall of a 3 658 by 3 048 mm (12 by 10 ft) room has 864 mm (2 ft 10 in) on each side and the same 1 016 mm past the end of the bed. Put the headboard on a 10 ft wall instead, and the sides shrink to 559 mm (1 ft 10 in), with 1 626 mm (5 ft 4 in) at the foot.
For someone who uses a wheelchair, the numbers change. To qualify for its accessibility money, Calgary's secondary suite incentive asks for "a bedroom with no measurement smaller than 3 m" and a 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) turning diameter in the bedroom (The City of Calgary, 2026). New applications have gone on a waitlist since 24 June 2026, but the standard is a useful Calgary benchmark. By arithmetic, a queen against one wall of a 3 m (9 ft 10 in) wide room leaves 1 476 mm (4 ft 10 in) beside it, just short of 1.5 m. The province's accessibility guide shows a 1 500 mm turning space beside the bed in its accessible hotel room layout (Alberta Municipal Affairs, 2024). The barrier-free bathroom guide covers the rest of an accessible suite.
Where a full-size walkthrough fits
In a bedroom, the plan's numbers decide small daily things, like reaching both sides of the bed or opening a dresser drawer past the frame. At 1to1 Plans Calgary, your plan is lit at full size from inside a walkable LED floor, room by room, with room names and dimension lines, so you can stand where the bed goes.
The studio's pieces don't include a bed, so draw yours on the plan at its real size. Then walk the checks: reach both sides of the bed from the door, open the closet and the dresser with the bed in place, and get to the escape window. Freestanding walls can be moved to try a different wall position, changes go up on the floor on the spot, and you keep the session recording.
Sessions are quoted for the plan by its size, the quote is free, and there's nothing to pay at booking (get a quote). See how the studio helps homeowners, the other room size guides, or book a session.
Questions
What is the minimum bedroom size in Alberta?
Alberta's building code sets no minimum bedroom size, as of September 2026. The NBC(AE) 2023 regulates a bedroom's ceiling height over part of the floor, its escape window, its doorway and its smoke alarm instead (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.3.1).
What size room do you need for a king bed?
For a king bed, the Canadian mattress company Endy suggests a room of at least 10 by 12 ft (3 048 by 3 658 mm). A king mattress is 76 by 80 in (1 930 by 2 032 mm), so centred on the 12 ft wall it leaves 864 mm (2 ft 10 in) on each side and 1 016 mm (3 ft 4 in) at the foot, before the frame.
How big should a primary bedroom be?
The NBC(AE) 2023 sets no size for a primary bedroom. The only rule for the room the code calls the master bedroom is a 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) ceiling over the lesser of the room or 4.9 m² (53 sq ft), where other bedrooms need 3.5 m² (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.3.1).
Size it around the bed and the furniture you'll use. For a king, Endy suggests no less than 10 by 12 ft.
Does a bedroom need a closet in Alberta?
No. The NBC(AE) 2023 doesn't require a closet in a bedroom. The code mentions walk-in closets only to size their doorway, which must fit a door 610 mm (2 ft) wide (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.5.1).
Does a basement bedroom need a window in Alberta?
Yes, unless the home is sprinklered. Every basement bedroom needs its own escape window or outside door, opening to at least 0.35 m² (3.8 sq ft) with no side under 380 mm (1 ft 3 in), and the escape route can't pass through another room (NBC(AE) 2023, 9.9.10.1).
What ceiling height does a bedroom need in Alberta?
A bedroom in Alberta needs a 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) ceiling over the lesser of the room or 3.5 m² (38 sq ft), or 4.9 m² (53 sq ft) in the master bedroom (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.3.1). A bedroom in a secondary suite follows the suite rule: 1.95 m (6 ft 5 in), and 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) under beams and ducts.
