What size room for a king bed: primary bedroom clearances

A king bed needs a room about 11 ft 4 in by 9 ft 2 in for 30 in walkways, and about 12 ft deep once a dresser sits at the foot. Alberta sets no minimum.

A king mattress is 76 by 80 in (1 930 by 2 032 mm), and with the 30 in (762 mm) walkway the design reference Dimensions.com recommends on its three open sides, it needs a room at least 3 454 by 2 794 mm (11 ft 4 in by 9 ft 2 in) (Dimensions.com, updated August 2026). Put a dresser at the foot and the room grows to about 3 581 to 3 734 mm (11 ft 9 in to 12 ft 3 in) deep. Alberta's building code sets no minimum bedroom size as of October 2026, so these numbers are guidance, not rules.

Key takeaways

  • Endy, a Canadian mattress maker, lists a king at 76 by 80 in (1 930 by 2 032 mm) and a California king at 72 by 84 in (1 829 by 2 134 mm) (Endy, 2023).
  • Dimensions.com recommends at least 30 in (762 mm), and ideally 36 in (914 mm), of clear floor around the open sides of a king (Dimensions.com, 2026).
  • Dimensions.com suggests 42 to 48 in (1 067 to 1 219 mm) of clear floor in front of a dresser so you can open a drawer fully and reach in (Dimensions.com, 2026).
  • The City of Calgary's sample permit drawings show a master bedroom of 11 ft 7 in by 12 ft 3 in (3 531 by 3 734 mm), which fits a king with about 800 mm (2 ft 8 in) on each side (The City of Calgary, 2016).
  • As of October 2026, the NBC(AE) 2023 sets no floor area for a primary bedroom, but sizes its doorway for a door at least 760 mm (2 ft 6 in) wide and a walk-in closet's for 610 mm (2 ft) (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.5.1).

What size room does a king bed need?

At least 11 ft 4 in by 9 ft 2 in for the bed and its walkways alone. Dimensions.com, a reference database of measured drawings, recommends minimum clearances of 30 in and "comfortable clearances" of 36 in around a king. It gives about 119 sq ft (11 m²) as the least area for a king with clearance, and 141 to 147 sq ft (13.1 to 13.7 m²) once closets are added (Dimensions.com, 2026).

These are the room sizes Dimensions.com draws for each bed, from the minimum to the comfortable clearance:

BedMattress (Endy)Room widthRoom depth
Queen1 524 by 2 032 mm (60 by 80 in)3 048 to 3 353 mm (10 to 11 ft)2 794 to 2 946 mm (9 ft 2 in to 9 ft 8 in)
King1 930 by 2 032 mm (76 by 80 in)3 454 to 3 759 mm (11 ft 4 in to 12 ft 4 in)2 794 to 2 946 mm (9 ft 2 in to 9 ft 8 in)
California king1 829 by 2 134 mm (72 by 84 in)3 353 to 3 658 mm (11 to 12 ft)2 896 to 3 048 mm (9 ft 6 in to 10 ft)

Note: design guidance for the bed and its walkways only, headboard on a wall (queen, California king); not code minimums, and no nightstands, dresser or closet.

The Better Sleep Council, sponsored by the International Sleep Products Association, gives the same king width "by approximately 80 inches long" and warns that sizes vary (Better Sleep Council, 2024). The frame adds more: IKEA's Malm queen frame is 1 680 by 2 110 mm (5 ft 6 in by 6 ft 11 in), about 156 mm (6.1 in) wider than its mattress, so measure your own frame (Dimensions.com, 2026).

How much room do nightstands and a dresser add?

Nightstands usually add no width, since they sit inside the walkway at the head of the bed. A dresser at the foot adds the most.

The Colette nightstand is 24 in wide and 18 in deep (610 by 457 mm) (Dimensions.com, 2026). A king with one each side is 3 150 mm (10 ft 4 in) across, narrower than the 3 454 mm the walkways already need. Dressers run 18 to 24 in (457 to 610 mm) deep (Dimensions.com, 2026); IKEA's Malm six-drawer is 63 by 19 in (1 600 by 483 mm) (Dimensions.com, 2026).

Adding those numbers gives the room a king needs as the furniture goes in:

LayoutWidth (headboard wall)Depth
King, 30 in walkways3 454 mm (11 ft 4 in)2 794 mm (9 ft 2 in)
King, 36 in walkways3 759 mm (12 ft 4 in)2 946 mm (9 ft 8 in)
King, 19 in dresser at the foot, 42 in in front3 454 mm (11 ft 4 in)3 581 mm (11 ft 9 in)
King, 19 in dresser at the foot, 48 in in front3 454 mm (11 ft 4 in)3 734 mm (12 ft 3 in)

Note: arithmetic on the cited mattress, furniture and clearance figures for a bare mattress; a frame or deep headboard takes a little more.

Will a king fit in a typical Calgary primary bedroom?

In the City of Calgary's own sample plan, yes, with room for a dresser. The City's sample new-home permit drawings show a master bedroom of 11 ft 7 in by 12 ft 3 in (3 531 by 3 734 mm), about 13.2 m² (142 sq ft), with doors marked "2/6", a 2 ft 6 in door (The City of Calgary, 2016). It's a drawing example, not a survey of Calgary houses, but a useful local reference.

A king on the 3 531 mm wall has about 800 mm (2 ft 8 in) each side and 1 702 mm (5 ft 7 in) at the foot. A 483 mm deep Malm dresser on the foot wall leaves 1 219 mm (4 ft) in front, the top of the Dimensions.com range, and two 610 by 457 mm nightstands sit at the head:

A king bed in the City of Calgary's sample master bedroom A 1 930 by 2 032 mm king in a 3 531 by 3 734 mm room leaves about 800 mm on each side and 1 219 mm in front of a 483 mm deep dresser, with a 760 mm door. Drawn to scale.

The 800 mm sides clear the 762 mm minimum but not the 914 mm comfortable figure. Here's the same room with each bed on the shorter wall:

BedEach sideFoot to wallIn front of a 483 mm dresser
Queen1 003 mm (3 ft 4 in)1 702 mm (5 ft 7 in)1 219 mm (4 ft)
King800 mm (2 ft 8 in)1 702 mm (5 ft 7 in)1 219 mm (4 ft)
California king851 mm (2 ft 10 in)1 600 mm (5 ft 3 in)1 118 mm (3 ft 8 in)

Note: arithmetic on the City's sample room and the cited sizes; the sample shows no furniture, and your doors and windows decide which wall the bed gets.

Turn the king so the headboard is on the 3 734 mm wall and the sides grow to about 902 mm (3 ft), but the dresser is left only 1 016 mm (3 ft 4 in), under the 42 in minimum. In the 10 by 12 ft room Endy suggests for a king, the bed fits with 864 mm (2 ft 10 in) each side, but a dresser at the foot would leave about 533 mm (1 ft 9 in), so it has to go elsewhere.

What does the Alberta code set for a primary bedroom?

Almost nothing about its size. As of October 2026, the National Building Code, 2023 Alberta Edition, sets no floor area or width for any bedroom. Beyond the window and alarm rules in the bedroom size guide, two points bear on a king-bed layout:

  • Ceiling. The room the code calls the master bedroom needs 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) of height over the lesser of the room or 4.9 m² (53 sq ft) (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.3.1). That matters under a sloped roof.
  • Measurement. Rooms are "measured between finished wall surfaces" (NBC(AE) 2023, 9.5.1.1). Ask your designer whether the plan's numbers run to the drywall or the framing; the bed only gets the finished size.

The City of Calgary checks these rules when it reviews your permit drawings. None of them says a room is big enough for your bed.

How much floor does the bedroom door take?

A hinged door sweeps a quarter circle as wide as the door, so a 760 mm (2 ft 6 in) bedroom door, the usual code minimum for a bedroom, needs a 760 by 760 mm patch of floor kept clear inside the room (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.5.1). Part 9 doesn't say which way a bedroom door swings; its swing rules cover doors at stairs and entrances.

In the sample room, the door sits on a side wall past the foot of the bed, so it swings into the 1 702 mm zone and misses the furniture. On the headboard wall, the same door would swing across a nightstand. If the door can't move, a pocket or sliding door frees the arc. A hallway in a house is generally at least 860 mm (2 ft 10 in) wide; see the hallway width guide.

What about closet doors and walk-in closets?

Closet doors take floor too, and the code only sizes the walk-in doorway: a door at least 610 mm (2 ft) wide and 1 980 mm (6 ft 6 in) high. Mirrored glass doors "are only permitted to be used at the entrance to clothes closets" (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.5.1 and 9.6.1.2).

Dimensions.com recommends a reach-in closet 24 in (610 mm) deep, down to 20 in (508 mm), with sliding, bifold or pocket doors (Dimensions.com, 2026). Sliding and pocket doors take no bedroom floor; hinged ones swing over it like the room door, so keep the bed and dresser out of their arcs. A one-sided walk-in is commonly 4 to 5 ft (1 219 to 1 524 mm) deep with a 36 in (914 mm) aisle (Dimensions.com, 2026).

Where a full-size walkthrough fits

The margins here are small, like 800 mm beside a bed against a 914 mm comfortable figure. At 1to1 Plans Calgary, your plan is lit at full size from inside a walkable LED floor, room by room, with room names and dimension lines, so you can stand in the primary bedroom before it's framed.

The studio's pieces don't include a bed, so have your designer draw the bed, nightstands and dresser on the plan at their real sizes. Then open the door and closet with the bed in place and walk both sides of it. Freestanding walls can be moved to try a closet position, changes go up on the floor on the spot, and you keep the session recording. That's cheaper than moving a framed wall.

Sessions are quoted for the plan by its size, the quote is free, and there's nothing to pay at booking (get a quote). See how the studio helps homeowners, the other room size guides, or book a session.

Questions

What size room do you need for a king bed?

A king bed needs a room at least 11 ft 4 in by 9 ft 2 in (3 454 by 2 794 mm) for 30 in (762 mm) walkways, or 12 ft 4 in by 9 ft 8 in for 36 in walkways (Dimensions.com, 2026).

How much space should you leave on each side of a king bed?

Beside a king bed, Dimensions.com recommends at least 30 in (762 mm) of clear floor and calls 36 in (914 mm) comfortable. That's design guidance; Alberta's building code sets no clearance around a bed.

Is a 12 by 12 ft room big enough for a king bed?

Yes, a 12 by 12 ft room (3 658 mm square) fits a king with 864 mm (2 ft 10 in) each side and 1 626 mm (5 ft 4 in) at the foot. A 19 in (483 mm) dresser on the foot wall would leave 1 143 mm (3 ft 9 in) in front, inside the 42 to 48 in range Dimensions.com recommends.

Does Alberta have a minimum size for a primary bedroom?

No. As of October 2026, Alberta's building code sets no minimum floor area or width for a primary bedroom. It sets a ceiling height over part of the floor, an escape window unless the home is sprinklered, and a doorway for a door at least 760 mm (2 ft 6 in) wide (NBC(AE) 2023, Table 9.5.5.1).

How much room does a bed need for a wheelchair user?

Much more. For new multi-unit projects in its universal design programs, CMHC asks for 1 800 mm (5 ft 11 in) of floor on one side of the bed and at the foot, and 1 200 mm (3 ft 11 in) on the other side. With a queen, that means a bedroom of at least 4 458 by 4 633 mm (14 ft 8 in by 15 ft 2 in) (CMHC, 2024).
