A bathroom renovation in Calgary costs $5,000 to $12,000 for a powder room, $15,000 to $30,000 for a main bathroom and $25,000 to $70,000 or more for an ensuite, according to Precision Construction & Decora's May 2026 guide (PCND, 2026). Pinnacle Group prices each type higher, up to $80,000 to $140,000 or more for a luxury ensuite (Pinnacle Group, 2026). Both name the layout as a main driver: PCND calls keeping fixtures where they are "the single biggest cost saver."

Key takeaways

  • A full main bathroom renovation in Calgary costs $15,000 to $30,000 in PCND's 2026 guide and $30,000 to $45,000 in Pinnacle Group's (PCND, 2026; Pinnacle Group, 2026).
  • Suite Home Renovations prices a four-piece that keeps its layout at $17,000 to $23,000, and a typical one with some plumbing moved at $22,000 to $35,000 (Suite Home Renovations, 2026).
  • Moving plumbing costs $2,000 to $10,000 in Pinnacle Group's guide, and a toilet that has to cross the floor joists is the bigger job (Pinnacle Group, 2026).
  • Turning a tub into a walk-in shower costs $6,000 to $18,000 or more in Calgary, and $10,000 to $14,000 for most tiled conversions (PCND, 2026).
  • As of October 2026, a Calgary plumbing or electrical permit costs $116.50 when a homeowner pulls it, and a building permit ($205.92) is needed only when walls move or openings change (The City of Calgary, fee schedule 2026).

What does a bathroom renovation cost in Calgary in 2026?

The type of bathroom sets the range. Here's what four Calgary contractors publish, with the date each guide was last updated:

Ensuite, premium or luxury$45,000 to $70,000+$80,000 to $140,000+Not priced$55,000 to $90,000+

Note: Planning ranges from each contractor's guide, not quotes. Olympic City's own summary gives higher figures than its table.

Why do Calgary bathroom prices disagree?

Because each company prices its own kind of job, and some guides don't agree with themselves. Pinnacle's powder room starts above PCND's top figure. Pinnacle notes that a room with no tub or shower still needs demolition, plumbing, electrical, flooring and finishing.

Olympic City Renovations is the clearest case. Its table puts a powder room refresh at $5,000 to $12,000, while the summary above it says $25,000 to $45,000 for "a smaller bathroom or powder room," and its luxury ensuite figure jumps from $55,000 to $90,000 in the table to $80,000 to $140,000 in the summary (Olympic City Renovations, 2026). The table describes a refresh and the summary a full renovation, so ask which one a number means.

The automated cost sites sit lower still: RenoCalc puts a standard Calgary bathroom at $8,510 to $20,700 (RenoCalc, 2026) and CostCanada gives a $26,250 average (CostCanada, 2026). As Suite Home puts it, two quotes for one room usually describe different jobs.

What does moving the toilet, tub or vanity add?

It depends on the floor under the bathroom more than the distance moved. Pinnacle explains that a sink or shower line can often move with modest work, but a toilet drain has to fit the floor framing. Moving it along the joists is manageable; moving it across them can mean opening the floor or the ceiling below, engineering and reframing (Pinnacle Group, 2026).

Here's what Calgary contractors publish for moving things:

Layout workPublished figureSource
Swap fixtures in the same locations$1,500 to $3,000Olympic City, 2026
Relocate a shower drain or tub-to-shower valveAdds $1,000 to $3,000PCND, 2026
Move plumbing (shower or drain relocation)$3,000 to $7,000Olympic City, 2026
Relocate plumbing, depending on joists and ceilings below$2,000 to $10,000Pinnacle Group, 2026
Add a second sink (double vanity)Adds $1,500 to $3,000Olympic City, 2026

Note: Contractors' planning figures, not quotes. A drain in a basement slab costs more again, PCND says, because the concrete is broken and re-poured.

The figures overlap because they describe different moves. A shower drain shifted within the old tub's alcove is PCND's $1,000 to $3,000; a toilet moved across the joists is the kind of job Pinnacle's wider range allows for.

Tub or shower: which footprint costs more?

A tiled shower costs more than the tub and surround it replaces, and PCND calls the jump from acrylic to tile the biggest line item in most conversions. It prices tub-to-shower conversions in three tiers (PCND, 2026):

ConversionWhat's involvedPCND, April 2026
Same-footprint swapAcrylic base and surround in the old tub's alcove, plumbing reused$6,000 to $9,000
Mid-range tiled showerTiled walls, waterproofed base, new valve, niche, glass panel$9,000 to $14,000
Premium or curblessCurbless entry, linear drain, bench, custom glass, relocated plumbing$14,000 to $18,000+

Note: Contractor's planning ranges, not quotes.

Curbless showers add $1,500 to $4,000 over a curbed base in PCND's guide, because the subfloor has to be recessed or built up to slope to the drain. PCND also advises keeping at least one tub in the house for resale.

Size matters as much as type. NKBA's planning guidelines, in the pre-2023 edition posted by its Puget Sound chapter, recommend a shower at least 36 by 36 in (914 by 914 mm) inside, and 30 in (762 mm) of clear floor in front of every fixture (NKBA bath guidelines, pre-2023 edition). They also recommend 18 in (457 mm) from the toilet's centreline to any wall or fixture, and 36 in (914 mm) between the centres of two sinks.

These are planning recommendations, not Alberta rules; the guide's "code" lines cite American codes that don't apply here. For a wheelchair-accessible layout, see the barrier-free bathroom guide.

Which layout decisions should you settle before pricing?

The ones that decide whether the plumber opens the floor. Settle these on the drawing before you ask for quotes:

  • Where the toilet goes. Ask which way the joists run before you move it.
  • Tub, shower or both. A same-alcove shower swap is PCND's $6,000 to $9,000; a curbless shower with relocated plumbing starts at $14,000.
  • One sink or two. A double vanity needs about 36 in between the sink centres and adds $1,500 to $3,000.
  • The fan. The National Building Code, 2023 Alberta Edition requires a bathroom exhaust fan of at least 25 L/s unless the house's main ventilation fan draws from that room (NBC(AE) 2023, 9.32.3.7).

Each of these costs more once the tile is on, as the guide to moving a wall after framing shows.

When does a bathroom renovation need a permit in Calgary?

Almost always for the plumbing, and only sometimes for the building. As of October 2026, the City requires a plumbing permit for new plumbing and for extending or altering existing pipes, an electrical permit for all electrical work, and a building permit only when walls move or new openings are cut (The City of Calgary, home renovations).

A homeowner's plumbing or electrical permit is $116.50. A contractor's is $112 plus $9.79 per $1,000 of the trade work, plus a 4% levy, and the building permit is $205.92 (The City of Calgary, fee schedule 2026). PCND's tub-to-shower guide suggests a building permit may apply above about $5,000 of work; the City's renovation page lists no dollar threshold, so confirm with the City.

What does the City's permit data show?

Very little about bathrooms, and the reason matters. Bathrooms aren't a permit class, and a bathroom that only needed plumbing and electrical permits isn't in the City's building permit data at all. Renovations that did need a building permit fall under "Improvements":

Renovations to existing houses, City of Calgary permits issued in 2025
Permit typePermitsMedian declared value
Single-family house1,400$10,000
Semi-detached or duplex24$10,000

Source: City of Calgary building permits open data, permits issued in 2025 excluding cancelled ones, retrieved 2026-09-25. The median is of the construction value declared on the permit application. It isn't a quote and usually runs below what the work really costs. New homes and commercial work pay permit fees on this value; most home alterations pay a flat fee.

Note: The declared value is the applicant's own figure, not a quote, and the renovation fee is flat whatever the value.

In a query of the City's open data on 5 October 2026, every 2025 single-family description read "Improvements" or similar, so bathrooms can't be picked out (The City of Calgary, open data). Window and concrete-cutting companies pulled 231 of the 1,400 permits, at a median of $3,925, which drags the overall median down to $10,000. Rusch Design Build's 9 permits, by contrast, had a median of $160,000, for renovations of any scope. The kitchen renovation cost guide breaks the 1,400 down by value.

Where does a full-size walkthrough fit?

Once the new layout is drawn and before the plumber prices it. At 1to1 Plans Calgary, the plan is lit at full size from inside a walkable LED floor, with room names and dimension lines. The studio has a bathtub on wheels and freestanding walls, so you can set a tub where the drawing shows one, stand in the shower footprint instead, and check the space in front of the toilet and vanity. Changes go up on the floor on the spot.

The floor shows the new plan, not the house, so check the joists with your contractor.

Sessions are quoted for the plan by its size, and the quote is free (get a quote). Send the drawings as a PDF or AutoCAD (DWG) file at least three days ahead, then book a session, or read how renovation sessions work. The same side-by-side breakdown covers home additions and detached garages.
