| Floor area on the permit | Houses |
|---|---|
| Under 1,500 sq ft | 105 |
| 1,500 to 1,999 sq ft | 514 |

Source: City of Calgary open data (building permits, development permits, secondary suite registry, census 2021 population, census 2021 households, civic census 2019, land use districts), retrieved 5 October 2026.
The median has hardly moved: 1,754 sq ft in 2023, 1,870 sq ft in 2024, 1,833 sq ft in 2025 and 1,772 sq ft on 2026 permits so far. That consistency suggests a community built around a narrower range of lot and house types than most. The median declared value on a new house was $278,658, the second lowest in the data. Applicants write that number on the form, and it sits below what a house really costs to build; the custom home cost guide has real figures.
At 1,800 sq ft, every room has to earn its place. A third bedroom that's 10 ft by 10 ft and one that's 9 ft by 11 ft hold different furniture, and the bedroom size guide shows what each takes.

Declared value is what the applicant wrote on the permit application. It is not a quote and runs below real costs. Medians are shown only where a category has at least 5 permits. Three kinds of work are higher in 2026 to date than in all of 2025: rowhouses (33 against 26), suites created by altering existing space (45 against 40) and suite permits the City classes as new construction (23 against 14). Deck permits jumped to 24 so far in 2026, after 9 in each of the two years before. Rowhouse permits cover a whole building of units, which is why their median declared value is $1,125,578 per permit.
Rangeview had no addition permits and no backyard suite permits in the period, and only 3 renovations, which suggests most homes are still with the owners who built or bought them new.

Development permits applied for from 1 January 2023; many home projects in Calgary need only a building permit, so these are a subset of all work. R-G covers about 52.7% of Rangeview and R-Gm another 11.3%, and in both, as of October 2026, a secondary suite and a backyard suite are each permitted uses, though a lot can have only one. The 70 development permit applications of all types took a median 112 days to a decision, so if your project does need one, plan for months, not weeks. The Calgary building permits guide explains which projects do.
Testing a compact Rangeview plan at full size
In a house this size, the difference between a plan that works and one that feels cramped is often a few inches in a hallway or where the island sits. The studio shows the plan at 1:1 on a walkable LED floor, room by room with dimension lines, and movable walls, a sofa, a dining table and a bathtub on wheels let you test the tight spots with real objects. Walk the upstairs with three bedrooms and a laundry, and you'll know which doors clash.
Changes are drawn on the spot and shown on the floor straight away. The session is recorded and the recording is yours. Send the plan as a PDF or DWG at least three days ahead; the quote is free and set by the plan's size. See pricing or book, and find more on the communities hub.
